ChatGPT + Sheets in 4 steps
October 11, 2026

ChatGPT is a great helper for Google Sheets. It can write formulas, explain what a sheet does, and draft Apps Script for menus, emails and schedules. The trick is giving it the right context.
Here is a workflow that works:
1. Tell ChatGPT your tab names, column names and a few sample rows. Never paste passwords, API keys or private data.
2. Describe what you want in one sentence, such as "total sales this month from columns A to D".
3. Paste the formula into a cell, or paste the script into Extensions > Apps Script and click Save.
4. Run it. If you get an error, paste the error back into ChatGPT and ask it to fix it.
Always test on a copy of your sheet first, and know where your backups are: File > Version history for the sheet, and Project history in Apps Script for the code.
The limit is the copying. ChatGPT cannot see or save your sheet's code, so every change goes through you. That is fine for a single formula. For bigger automations, Claude with BrilSheet's free MCP connector reads and saves the script itself, with a backup before every change.
